An Amazon Best Book of November 2018: Ayoola is the merriest murderer you ever did see. Young and beautiful, the favorite child, she’s on the phone to her older sister when My Sister, The Serial Killer opens, asking her to come quick. She’s just killed her boyfriend and needs help clearing the scene. It’s not the first time one of Ayoola’s boyfriends has met the business end of her blade, either. Older sister Korede, plain and overlooked, has drawn on her nursing training to clean up after two other hapless beaux. Who better to make blood disappear? And so far, Korede’s objections have been centered on classification ("Femi makes three, you know. Three and they label you a serial killer") rather than say, morality. As she says of her sister: “She needs me more than I need untainted hands.” But when the object of Korede’s desire, a doctor at the Lagos hospital where she works, becomes trapped in Ayoola’s web, fraternal loyalty collides with sibling rivalry, and one of these women is deadly with a knife. Darkly comic is a powerful understatement here; this short debut packs a brutal punch, crackling with glee and sly humor. Pages never turned so fast. —Vannessa Cronin "Feverishly hot." —PAULA HAWKINS, author of GIRL ON THE TRAIN"Lethally elegant." —LUKE JENNINGS, author of KILLING EVE: Codename Villanelle"Disturbing, sly and delicious." —AYOBAMI ADEBAYO, author of STAY WITH ME"A taut, rapidly paced thriller that pleasurably subverts serial killer and sisterhood tropes for a guaranteed fun afternoon." —HUFFINGTON POST“It’s Lagos noir—pulpy, peppery and sinister, served up in a comic deadpan…This book is, above all, built to move, to hurtle forward—and it does so, dizzyingly. There’s a seditious pleasure in its momentum. At a time when there are such wholesome and dull claims on fiction—on its duty to ennoble or train us in empathy—there’s a relief in encountering a novel faithful to art’s first imperative: to catch and keep our attention… This scorpion-tailed little thriller leaves a response, and a sting, you will remember.” —PARUL SEHGAL, NEW YORK TIMES“Campy and delightfully naughty…A taut and darkly funny contemporary noir that moves at lightning speed, it’s the wittiest and most fun murder party you’ve ever been invited to.” —SAM IRBY, MARIE CLAIRE  “Braithwaite’s writing pulses with the fast, slick heartbeat of a YA thriller, cut through by a dry noir wit. That aridity is startling, a trait we might expect from someone older, more jaded—a Cusk, an Offill. But Braithwaite finds in young womanhood a reason to be bitter. At the center of these women’s lives is a knot of pain, and when it springs apart, it bloodies the world.” —NEW REPUBLIC“This riveting, brutally hilarious, ultra-dark novel is an explosive debut by Oyinkan Braithwaite, and heralds an exciting new literary voice… Delicious.” —NYLON"You can't help flying through the pages.." —BUZZFEED“Oyinkan Braithwaite is rewriting the slasher novel, and man, does it look good. My Sister, The Serial Killer is a wholly original novel where satire and serial killers brush up against each other… A terrific and clever novel about sisterhood and blurred lines of morality.” —REFINERY29  “A rich, dark debut. . . . Evocative of the murderously eccentric Brewster sisters from the classic play and film “Arsenic and Old Lace,” . . . Braithwaite doesn’t mock the murders as comic fodder, and that’s just one of the unexpected pleasures of her quirky novel. . . . A clever, affecting examination of siblings bound by a secret with a body count.” —BOSTON GLOBE “A biting mix of wickedness and wit, Oyinkan Braithwaite weaves her narrative with a confidence that you've never read anything quite like it.” —INSTYLE"Braithwaite’s blazing debut is as sharp as a knife...bitingly funny and brilliantly executed, with not a single word out of place." —PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, (starred review)"Strange, funny and oddly touching...Pretty much perfect...It wears its weirdness excellently." —LITHUB"Who is more dangerous? A femme fatale murderess or the quiet, plain woman who cleans up her messes? I never knew what was going to happen, but found myself pulling for both sisters, as I relished the creepiness and humor of this modern noir." —HELEN ELLIS, author of AMERICAN HOUSEWIFE"A gem, in the most accurate sense: small, hard, sharp, and polished to perfection. Every pill-sized chapter is exemplary." —EDGAR CANTERO, author of MEDDLING KIDS"Sly, risky, and filled with surprises, Oyinkan Braithwaite holds nothing back in this wry and refreshingly inventive novel about violence, sister rivalries and simply staying alive." —IDRA NOVEY, author of THOSE WHO KNEW

"Pulpy, peppery and sinister, served up in a comic deadpan...This scorpion-tailed little thriller leaves a response, and a sting, you will remember."--NEW YORK TIMES

LONGLISTED FOR THE 2019 WOMEN'S PRIZE

A short, darkly funny, hand grenade of a novel about a Nigerian woman whose younger sister has a very inconvenient habit of killing her boyfriends

"Femi makes three, you know. Three and they label you a serial killer."

Korede is bitter. How could she not be? Her sister, Ayoola, is many things: the favorite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola's third boyfriend in a row is dead.

Korede's practicality is the sisters' saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood, the trunk of her car is big enough for a body, and she keeps Ayoola from posting pictures of her dinner to Instagram when she should be mourning her "missing" boyfriend. Not that she gets any credit.

Korede has long been in love with a kind, handsome doctor at the hospital where she works. She dreams of the day when he will realize that she's exactly what he needs. But when he asks Korede for Ayoola's phone number, she must reckon with what her sister has become and how far she's willing to go to protect her.

Sharp as nails and full of deadpan wit, Oyinkan Braithwaite's deliciously deadly debut is as fun as it is frightening.

I liked this a lot. This darkly humorous novel tells the story of Korede, the ugly duckling elder sister of a younger sister who is the darling of everyone but who happens to be a serial killer. The writing in this is fabulously accessible and if even for a moment you’ve ever felt like the wallflower or overlooked in any way, Korede’s narrative will have you nodding your head in empathy. This novel despite the macabre themes is light enough that you don’t feel the heaviness and darkness even in the tragic backstory of Korede’s Family. There’s no message or real theme here beyond the simple question that asks you what you’d do for loyalty to protect your family. To me, this is pure, dark, grisly fun and I highly recommend.Wonderful Debut Novella! I really enjoyed this novella. I finished it in about 3 hours.It is about two sisters, one who is a serial killer and the other is a nurse who cleans up after her sister's crimes. They live in Lagos, Nigeria.The premise of the book seems very realistic. The girls were raised by a very abusive father and don't know what real love looks like. However, there is a strong aspect of satire because everything is so extreme. One sister is extremely beautiful while the other is apparently very unattractive. The crimes were over the top and the lack of investigation into the crimes was laughable.I am looking forward to reading Oyinkan Braithwaite's future writing.Modern Noir At Its Finest.... Absurd and smart at the same time. Just the right book to pick up if you want some mindless entertainment. It is well written, but the actual story is the true gem. It doesn't get any better than a femme fatale and her co-dependent sister covering up murders. I wanted it to end differently, but it's still an enjoyable read.

A cult that was apparently founded by Magnus himself. Years ago. As a joke.

Now Magnus and Alec must race across Europe to track down the Crimson Hand and its elusive new leader before the cult can cause any more damage. As if it wasn’t bad enough that their romantic getaway has been sidetracked, demons are now dogging their every step, and it is becoming harder to tell friend from foe. Tell Your Children Pdf

ISBN: 1982103663
Title: Tell Your Children Pdf The Truth About Marijuana, Mental Illness, and Violence
Author: Alex Berenson
Published Date: 2019-01-08
Page: 272

Alex Berenson is a former New York Times reporter and award-winning novelist. He attended Yale University and joined the Times in 1999, where he covered everything from the drug industry to Hurricane Katerina and served as a correspondent in Iraq. In 2006, The Faithful Spy, his debut novel, won the Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best First Novel. He has since written eleven more novels. Currently, he lives in the Hudson Valley with his wife and children. Tell Your Children is his second nonfiction book.

An eye-opening report from an award-winning author and former New York Times reporter reveals the link between teenage marijuana use and mental illness, and a hidden epidemic of violence caused by the drug—facts the media have ignored as the United States rushes to legalize cannabis.

Recreational marijuana is now legal in nine states. Almost all Americans believe the drug should be legal for medical use. Advocates argue cannabis can help everyone from veterans to cancer sufferers. But legalization has been built on myths– that marijuana arrests fill prisons; that most doctors want to use cannabis as medicine; that it can somehow stem the opiate epidemic; that it is not just harmless but beneficial for mental health. In this meticulously reported book, Alex Berenson, a former New York Times reporter, explodes those myths:

• Almost no one is in prison for marijuana;
• A tiny fraction of doctors write most authorizations for medical marijuana, mostly for people who have already used;
• Marijuana use is linked to opiate and cocaine use. Since 2008, the US and Canada have seen soaring marijuana use and an opiate epidemic. Britain has falling marijuana use and no epidemic;
• Most of all, THC—the chemical in marijuana responsible for the drug’s high—can cause psychotic episodes. After decades of studies, scientists no longer seriously debate if marijuana causes psychosis.

Psychosis brings violence, and cannabis-linked violence is spreading. In the four states that first legalized, murders have risen 25 percent since legalization, even more than the recent national increase. In Uruguay, which allowed retail sales in July 2017, murders have soared this year.

Berenson’s reporting ranges from the London institute that is home to the scientists who helped prove the cannabis-psychosis link to the Colorado prison where a man now serves a thirty-year sentence after eating a THC-laced candy bar and killing his wife. He sticks to the facts, and they are devastating.

With the US already gripped by one drug epidemic, this book will make readers reconsider if marijuana use is worth the risk.

There is truth in this book As I read the comments, "shut-up" "this is pseudo-science" and more, I am appalled at the unwillingness to critically and objectively examine the authors research and arguments. It harkens back to the days when the dangers of cigarettes were thought to be hawked by a bunch of crazies, when of course, there couldn't have been any inherent dangers!Clearly, there is still much to continue researching in the debate on pot use and mental illness but the evidence is beyond compelling and other countries, notably Great Britain, are light years ahead in looking at the link between marijuana usage, mental illness and violence.I am an educated woman who happens to be a mother to a now 29 year old son whose life has absolutely been devastated by his marijuana use and now addiction. My son went to a top university where he was an All-American athlete, and was working for Ameri-Corps teaching under privileged children in New Mexico post graduation. He was planning on pursuing his PHD and dedicate himself to fighting and fixing the injustices in the education system. My son showed ZERO symptoms of any mental illness, was living with his girlfriend and was extremely well-liked. He was sensitive, intelligent, kind and always fought for the underdog in a gentle and loving manner.I will spare many of the details, but at age 24 my son had his first psychotic break and it was only then that we learned about his marijuana use. One may think in reading this; I'm a heart-broken mother, and that's what this is all about - one who can't face the fact her son is mentally ill. I have dedicated myself to learning and understanding ALL I can about my son's journey and illness. My son has now had 17 hospitalizations, been homeless on the streets for months at at time, been in jail and shown absolute signs of violence. It is just a matter of time. Doctor after doctor in the psych wards knows the link between marijuana and psychosis as do the devastated parents I've met in the hospitals. This is NOT just mental illness or depression. I do not know, nor do scientists yet, the link between the "pre-disposed" brain with genetic links to mental illness and marijuana use. But my sons journey has 100% been certainly impacted, and I may daresay CAUSED by marijuana. There is no family history on either side of mental illness and nothing explains the propensity towards violence.People, parents and everyone in general - wake up. This is not hysteria or anything close. I am an extremely open-minded individual who leans heavily liberal to many and most causes. This is a dire warning, and yes, especially for adolescents who, as the author explains, are at huge risk because of their developing brains. At this point, we have been unable to help our son who, as the latest lawyer says, will most likely spend the rest of his life in the penal system unless a miracle appears.Pay attention - this is real.Waste of time Just read your article in the NYT. Shoddy arguments. Dangerous in fact. No thanks!Fabricated nonsense As a cannabis expert, hardly anything in this book is actually true. It is manipulative, cherry-picks studies and statistics, paints a false, apocalyptic narrative, points to consensus in areas where none exists, and flat out fabricates in other areas. It is as if the author didn't successfully cross the line from fiction to nonfiction. Profoundly disappointing.

Billy Chapata is a Zimbabwean writer, author, and creative based in Atlanta, Georgia. Billy's work aims to touch on the concepts of love, healing, connections, and growth, through poetry, storytelling, and narrative. Writing came into his life as a means of sustenance, self-love, and empowerment: Billy writes to heal, he writes to grow, he writes to survive. His poetically infused words, memorable lessons, and bittersweet experiences have become a point of resonance and comfort for many across the world.

Zimbabwean poet Billy Chapata provides a thought-provoking take on the universal experiences of love, pain, and what comes next through messages of empowerment. This collection of poetry and prose will justify heartache and inspire the fortitude to survive and prosper.

Chameleon Aura presents a harmonious blend of experience and advice through a chaptered series of prose and poetry that focuses on shared experiences in love and loss. Emboldened words and phrases capture the essence of the author's message and distinguish his unique style. Chapata's touching narrative celebrates humanity for their biological resilience and undeniable worth. This collection leaves readers warm with hope for growth, rebirth, and, most prominently, self-acceptance.

This collection right here is gold! Have you ever felt words? I am talking about being consumed by the words not just reading or skimming through but feeling every word, rolling it off your tongue, having goosebumps, nodding your head and going "amen! to that" as you partake of them?This collection is personal and I do not know the author's intent but I could only say "I hear you, I feel you," as I read most of the poems and my two-cents is that it's in line with the ever changing metamorphosis of a chameleon.Thank you Netgalley for the eARC, I am seriously bummed as a reviewer that I cannot quote the poems I want to, but hey...that's brilliant of you because I'd quote half of this book!AWESOME Great book!The introduction will touch your soul! Buy yourself this book and it'll be the best gift you get yourself all year. Share it with others and they will thank you endlessly. I dog eared 80% of "Sour Honey and Soul Food" it is that amazing. Billy writes with the kind of vulnerability we all feel in our hearts but rarely share, even with our closest tribe and maybe even ourselves. Do yourself the favor in reading the words you have probably felt but did not have the words for. We are not alone and Billy reminds us of that endlessly.
