Title: Sex at Dawn Pdf How We Mate, Why We Stray, and What It Means for Modern Relationships
Author: Christopher Ryan
Published Date: 2011-07-05
Page: 432

“Sex At Dawn has helped me understand myself and the world so much more clearly.” (Ilana Glazer, co-creator of Broad City)“Sex At Dawn is the single most important book about human sexuality since Alfred Kinsey unleashed Sexual Behavior in the Human Male on the American public in 1948.” (Dan Savage)“Funny, witty, and light ... Sex at Dawn is a scandal in the best sense, one that will have you reading the best parts aloud and reassessing your ideas about humanity’s basic urges well after the book is done.” (Newsweek)“Sex At Dawn challenges conventional wisdom about sex in a big way... This is a provocative, entertaining, and pioneering book. I learned a lot from it and recommend it highly.” (Andrew Weil, M.D., author of Healthy Aging)“Sex At Dawn is a provocative and engaging synthesis... that has the added benefit of being a joy to read.... A book sure to generate discussion, and one likely to produce more than a few difficult conversations with family marriage counselors.” (Eric Michael Johnson, Seed Magazine)“You clearly have an exciting book on your hands, whether people agree with it or not: these are issues that will need debating over and over before we will arrive at a resolution.” (Frans de Waal, author of The Age of Empathy)“A wonderfully provocative and well-written book which completely re-evaluates human sexual behaviour and gets to the root of many of our social and psychological ills.” (Steve Taylor, author of The Fall and Waking From Sleep)“One of the most original books I’ve read in years, Sex at Dawn manages to be both enormously erudite and wildly entertaining―even, frequently, hilarious. . . . A must-read for anyone interested in where our sexual impulses come from.” (Tony Perrottet, author of Napoleon's Privates)“This paradigm-shifting book is a thoroughly original discussion of the origins and nature of human sexuality... These authors have a gift for making complex material reader-friendly, filling each chapter with humor and passion as well as dozens of revolutionary insights.” (Stanley Krippner, Ph.D.)“Christopher Ryan and Cacilda Jetha have written the essential corrective to the evolutionary psychology literature...” (Stanton Peele, Ph.D.) In this controversial, thought-provoking, and brilliant book, renegade thinkers Christopher Ryan and Cacilda Jethá debunk almost everything we “know” about sex, weaving together convergent, frequently overlooked evidence from anthropology, archaeology, primatology, anatomy, and psychosexuality to show how far from human nature monogamy really is. In Sex at Dawn, the authors expose the ancient roots of human sexuality while pointing toward a more optimistic future illuminated by our innate capacities for love, cooperation, and generosity.

Sex at Dawn challenges conventional wisdom about sex in a big way. By examining the prehistoric origins of human sexual behavior the authors are able to expose the fallacies and weaknesses of standard theories proposed by most experts. This is a provocative, entertaining, and pioneering book. I learned a lot from it and recommend it highly.” — Andrew Weil, M.D.

“Sex at Dawn irrefutably shows that what is obvious—that human beings, both male and female, are lustful—is true, and has always been so…. The more dubious its evidentiary basis and lack of connection with current reality, the more ardently the scientific inevitability of monogamy is maintained—even as it falls away around us.” — Stanton Peele, Ph.D.

A controversial, idea-driven book that challenges everything you (think you) know about sex, monogamy, marriage, and family. In the words of Steve Taylor (The Fall, Waking From Sleep), Sex at Dawn is “a wonderfully provocative and well-written book which completely re-evaluates human sexual behavior and gets to the root of many of our social and psychological ills.”

This Book Answers a Lot of Questions About Who I Am and How I Engage in Romance and Relationships To the Authors: Thank you for researching, compiling, and writing this book.To those thinking of reading it: Do it. The book is dense. It is full of citations, quotes from studies, and anthropological research, though quite fun once you get into the rhythm and style of it. What's truly awesome is what the research and data reveal about human sexuality. There's more to us than the stories told in Disney movies, religious texts, and fairy tales (and far more importantly to me, it successfully challenges the standard model of sexual human behavior held up by most scientists). I'd read a chapter a night, or several on a flight, and then spend the next day sporadically realizing why something in a past relationship happened, or why I have always felt a certain way about myself or the wonderful women in my life. The book has made me grateful, more mature, and more comfortable in my own skin and emotions.Worth it.Probably not a good anniversary gift... but, wow Without denying the seriousness of the authors's intent, "Sex at Dawn" is one of the most entertaining books I've read in awhile. The authors, Cacilda Jetha, a medical doctor, and Christopher Ryan, a psychologist, argue that human beings are not inherently monogamous and that our collective civilizational effort to shoehorn people into life-long pair-bonds goes against our biological heritage and has led to much unnecessary misery. They stake this claim on a considerable amount of reading into recent anthropological, primatological and genetic research; specifically, they say that, as humans share roughly 99% of their DNA with chimps and bonobos, and as neither of those species practices monogamy (and in fact no primate, except the gibbon, does), our own genetic inheritance tends towards polyamory. In fact, they trot out examples from such indigenous cultures as the Mosuo in China to argue that pre-historic humans were most likely not monogamous: widespread promiscuity promoted bonding among members of extended hunter-gatherer clans, reduced inter-group tension, and promoted sperm competition as females had sex with multiple male partners and rival sperm competed for the right to fertilization. It's not hard to understand why "Sex at Dawn" has been embraced by sexologists while primatologists and anthropologists have been noticeably cooler in their reception. The book is like a bomb thrown not only against the very notion of monogamy but also against the standard narrative in anthropology that pair-bonding is universal in human societies because women trade sexual access for food and protection. The authors make little effort to conceal their impatience and irritation with this 'standard narrative' and, indeed, much of "Sex at Dawn" reads as though it were written by an exasperated zealot (or over-ambitious grad student) who can't fathom why everyone else remains so in the dark. At the very least, it's not boring. But the book should probably be taken with more than a few grains of salt. First of all, "Sex at Dawn" rehashes an already well-worn Enlightenment-era belief in the uninhibited 'noble savage,' uncorrupted by the restraints of civilization. Rousseau was, of course, a proponent of this and Diderot's "Supplement to the Voyages of Bougainville" pretty much encapsulates Ryan and Jetha, albeit with more wit. As others have pointed out, there are instances of monogamous indigenous peoples too that the authors don't really consider. Also, they don't really respond to one of their central theses: if the adoption of agriculture was such a disaster (sexually and in terms of quality of life) for human beings, why did they persist with it? If agricultural village settlements forced human beings into a monogamous corset, why then did they persist with it for 6,000 years before the advent of the first civilizations? Finally, Ryan and Jetha stake much of their argument on asserting that 99% of human being's DNA overlap with that of bonobos, the most sexually promiscuous primates. Yet, we share the same percentage (99%) with chimps who are more territorial, aggressive, and somewhat less promiscuous than bonobos. Essentially, by privileging bonobos Ryan and Jetha over-correct previous writers's (like Jared Diamond) tendency to focus on our chimp heritage: we really need a book that tries to relate both our chimp and bonobo genetic backgrounds together.Still, for a book so steeped in academic research, it's a blast to read, except when the authors start to consider the implications of their own argument. Having spent 300 pages explaining how monogamy is so unnatural and sexual exclusivity is probably the main cause of marital failure (in their view), they then shy away from any prescriptive advice. They don't quite want to push marriage over a cliff and advocate polyamory (for males, anyway; they're even more reticent interestingly enough on the implications of their argument for female behavior) but the logic of the book tends in that direction. But, as Freud argued, we are stuck with civilization and its neuroses whether we like them or not. Thus, they can't quite advocate free love (not as long as we have private property, anyway) but they insist that marriage is a botch too. For all its strident confidence in our biologically-driven amorality, "Sex at Dawn" ends by waffling all over the place.I did love reading it, however, even when I recognized that the authors were pushing their case too far. At the very least, it gets you thinking about why so many marriages and pairings fail, why cheating is so rampant, and whether there is indeed an evolutionary legacy that is inimical to our social arrangements (rather than just instances of individual moral failure). While a relatively easy read and presenting some interesting and new (to me) ... While a relatively easy read and presenting some interesting and new (to me) information, I didn't really see a central idea here other than people like sex and, as a western society, we're doing it wrong.Okay, point taken. So, what's the right way?

Say Nothing Download

ISBN: 0385521316
Title: Say Nothing Pdf A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland
Author: Patrick Radden Keefe
Published Date: 2019
Page: 464

An Amazon Best Book of March 2019: Many a writer has attempted to parse the 400 years of colonial/sectarian violence that preceded the Troubles in Northern Ireland. But Say Nothing shows young paramilitaries compelled by more recent, deeply personal history: an aunt who lost her eyes and hands while setting a bomb, peaceful marchers ambushed and stoned on a bridge. With no dog in the race, an outsider such as Keefe can recount with stark, rousing clarity the story of an IRA gunman trying not to scream as a doctor sews up his severed artery in the front room of a safe house while a British armored tank rumbles outside. Or describe how Jean McConville, a widowed mother of ten, came to be suspected of being an informer, a charge which led to her being taken from her home by the IRA one night in 1972, her young ones clinging to her legs. Hastened to her grave by a bullet to the back of her head, her bones lay buried on a remote beach for thirty years, years during which her children were left to live and work alongside neighbors they suspected, yet dared not accuse, of being responsible for her death. With the pacing of a thriller, and an intricate, yet compulsively readable storytelling structure, Keefe’s exhaustive reportage brings home the terror, the waste, and the heartbreaking futility of a guerrilla war fought in peoples’ homes as well as in the streets. And he captures the devastation of veterans on both sides, uneasily enjoying the peace that finally came while wondering if they had fought the good fight or been complicit in murder all along. --Vannessa Cronin, Amazon Book Review NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLERLONGLISTED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER OF THE ORWELL PRIZE "Resolutely humane. . .Say Nothing [has an] exacting and terrifying lucidity. . .meticulously reported. . .Keefe's narrative is an architectural feat, expertly constructed out of complex and contentious material, arranged and balanced just so. . .an absorbing drama." —JENNIFER SZALAI, The New York Times"Say Nothing has lots of the qualities of good fiction. . . By turns gripping and profoundly revelatory, Say Nothing shines a brighter light on Northern Ireland's tragic past than any history book."—SCOTT ANDERSON, New York Times bestselling author of Lawrence in Arabia“A shattering, intimate study of how young men and women consumed by radical political violence are transformed by the history they make, and struggle to come to terms with the blood they have shed, Say Nothing is a powerful reckoning. NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

"A masterful history of the Troubles. . . Extraordinary. . .As in the most ingenious crime stories, Keefe unveils a revelation — lying, so to speak, in plain sight."
Maureen Corrigan, NPR

From award-winning New Yorker staff writer Patrick Radden Keefe, a stunning, intricate narrative about a notorious killing in Northern Ireland and its devastating repercussions

In December 1972, Jean McConville, a thirty-eight-year-old mother of ten, was dragged from her Belfast home by masked intruders, her children clinging to her legs. They never saw her again. Her abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

Patrick Radden Keefe's mesmerizing book on the bitter conflict in Northern Ireland and its aftermath uses the McConville case as a starting point for the tale of a society wracked by a violent guerrilla war, a war whose consequences have never been reckoned with. The brutal violence seared not only people like the McConville children, but also I.R.A. members embittered by a peace that fell far short of the goal of a united Ireland, and left them wondering whether the killings they committed were not justified acts of war, but simple murders. From radical and impetuous I.R.A. terrorists such as Dolours Price, who, when she was barely out of her teens, was already planting bombs in London and targeting informers for execution, to the ferocious I.R.A. mastermind known as The Dark, to the spy games and dirty schemes of the British Army, to Gerry Adams, who negotiated the peace but betrayed his hardcore comrades by denying his I.R.A. past--Say Nothing conjures a world of passion, betrayal, vengeance, and anguish.

A caveat about a very good book, otherwise worthy of five stars. This book fulfills the needs of many of us who have relied upon limited accounts in US news media to understand the decades of "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland. Its detail complements what I learned during a visit to Northern Ireland in 2010 which helped me to understand the causes and impacts of the strife there and to anticipate the risks to the stability of the intervening two decades of "peace" which are threatened as decisions about post-Brexit borders loom.My caveat about the value of the book is that for those who may not closely read and assimilate the information in the relevant pages, for example 274 and 333, the casual reader may reach the conclusion that the paramilitary republican groups were the initial, and the sole, perpetrators of violence. Sifting the books' contents closely, one does find elements which negate that conclusion. On page 274 we learn that loyalist groups, supported by members of the British state, killed "hundreds" of civilians. On page 333, this charge is reiterated and the refrains, "What about Bloody Sunday?" and "What about Bloody Friday?" are charged as if in justifying one action by another. Further there are suggestions that the authorities may have tended to rely more heavily on transcripts that revealed violence by republicans than those of loyalists, perhaps because the latter might reveal the role that those authorities had played in league with the loyalists' causes. The complex nature of this tragic time should not be reached shallowly by readers' impressions. I call for greater balance in leading to understanding what drove these events. In 2010, I visited the Bloody Sunday museum in Derry not long after British officials finally officially acknowledged that their earlier defense of the actions leading to the death of 14 individuals engaged in a peace march had not been accurate. Finally, after more than three decades, it was admitted that 14 innocent and unarmed peace marchers were mowed down, some killed by a shot in the back while running away, by a military acting without justifiable provocation. The author did well characterize the disproportionate violence by the authorities in his account of the marchers who were met by authorities at Burntollet Bridge but here the outcome was not as mortal even if it fueled the subsequent violence in reprise.Personalizing the victim who was the widowed mother of 10 and following through with descriptions of the impact on her children might cause many readers to assign all the blame for The Troubles on the IRA. Having heard the story of an adolescent school girl who was killed by a rubber bullet from a military gun, her blood cleaned off the sidewalk by the mothers in the neighborhood, I had acquired a personal acquaintance with this victim of the authorities. By also personalizing the victims of violence that was brought by authorities, among these, the little girl hit by the rubber bullet or the 14 peace marchers who were intentionally killed, the author may have been able to achieve better balance. Surely, too, the author might have personalized a few of the victims among the "hundreds" that were killed by the loyalists? Knowing the innocence of those victims and the impact on their loved ones that followed from their senseless killing would have provided the balance that many readers might benefit from. Personalizing only one victim has rendered imbalance.A close reader already acquainted with the events may not have needed a balanced rendering but those readers, so informed, may not have needed to read the book. I only "down-star" my rating because of concern that blame needs to be balanced so that cause is understood and change can be embraced. Staying in a B&B in Derry, we met a South African who was there to consult on Truth and Reconciliation. That program involves divulging guilt to achieve reconciliation. What can the perpetrators and victims of violence in Northern Ireland learn when there is balance among the blameful?Secret Documents, Murder, and The Troubles in Northern Ireland A subpoena was served on Boston College in Massachusetts to get secret documents locked in the university archives. The information detailed incidents about what happened during The Troubles in Northern Ireland. Catholics and Protestants were locked in a struggle for control. Youngsters, doing the bidding of the IRA (Irish Republican Army), planted bombs and carried out murders. It was an horrific time that few outside Ireland understand. The book opens with the abduction and murder of Jean McConville, thirty-eight-year-old mother of ten. However, this is not a true crime book. After the introduction to Jean we hear nothing more until nearly the end of the book. The intervening chapters detail the bitter conflict. We learn of terrorist activities and get to meet some of the actors, like the Price sisters and other members of the IRA. Although there are a great many characters, the book is well written and easy to follow.I highly recommend this book. It is the history of a terrible period in Northern Ireland. Before reading it, I knew very little about The Troubles. This book paints a picture of how society was torn apart and people committed acts that haunted them for their entire lives.I received this book from Net Galley for this review.A must read I visited Northern Ireland as a psychologist, in 1997. I had been working with families of murder victims, and had the chance to learn about the differences between street violence in America and political violence in Northern Ireland. Nothing prepared me for what I found.Keefe's book is the best book I have read about the reasons for, and impact of, political violence in Ireland. It goes deeper into the minds and lives of IRA operatives than anything I have read. It is terribly sad. And it is chillingly detailed. This is truly one of the finest pieces of investigative reporting and narrative nonfiction I have ever read. One other thing: this book provides a warning for those in America who ever consider the use of paramilitary violence to achieve extreme ends.

Title: Lethal Agent Pdf A Mitch Rapp Novel, Book 18

An unprecedented and terrifying bioterrorism plot threatens to kill millions in the midst of a divisive presidential election in this new thriller from the number-one New York Times best-selling Mitch Rapp series.

A toxic presidential election is underway in an America already badly weakened by internal divisions. While politicians focus entirely on maintaining their own power and privilege, ISIS kidnaps a brilliant French microbiologist and forces him to begin manufacturing anthrax. Slickly produced videos chronicling his progress and threatening an imminent attack are posted to the internet, intensifying the hysteria gripping the US.

ISIS recruits a Mexican drug cartel to smuggle the bioweapon across the border, but it's really just a diversion. The terrorist organization needs to keep Mitch Rapp and Irene Kennedy distracted long enough to weaponize a deadly virus that they stumbled upon in Yemen. If they succeed, they'll trigger a pandemic that could rewrite the world order.

Rapp embarks on a mission to infiltrate the Mexican cartels and track down the ISIS leader who he failed to kill during their last confrontation. But with Washington's political elite increasingly lined up against him, he knows he'll be on his own.

"In the world of black-ops thrillers, Mitch Rapp remains the gold standard" (Booklist, starred review).

Actually Much Better Than I Expected! I didn't know until I received this book that Vince Flynn had died 16 years ago and that Kyle Mills was continuing the legacy of Mitch Rapp. This is a strongly written and well executed thriller populated with the political climate currently existing in America. Politics has always been joked about with such queries as "How can you tell if a politician is telling a lie? He opened his mouth". That of course equally applies to female politicians. It's become very hard to tell who is telling the truth and who is spewing lies to enhance their position. It seems as though everybody lies to enhance their position. In this case the incumbent president is finishing up his eight years in office and has surrendered to the fact that a strong female senator (from the other party) is bound to win the next election. Politics now seems to be more about power than serving the public. An exchange between these two adversaries went like this: said the Senator to the President -- "you rule your way and I'll rule my way". Our country is supposed to be a republic, not a monarchy for personal gain. Politics has come a long way from the John Kennedy years. "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country". Many politicians now leave office with a greatly enhanced net worth. The political byplay just barely takes second place behind the main plot which involves ISIS unleashing a bioweapon on American soil. CIA personnel are just as ruthless and cunning as their ISIS counterparts. The inclusion of some of the Mexican cartels ups the ante in this increasingly dire situation. Everyone seems to live by the old adage of "fight fire with fire". There are some pretty graphic scenes in this novel that will certainly capture your attention. They are barbaric, they are automatically meted out, and they are very effective. Man's inhumanity to man is a given.Even if you the reader finds some of this action offensive, it's worth wading through it to get the complete picture as painted by author Kyle Mills. Not knowing otherwise, my assumption is that Vince Flynn may have outlined this story line prior to his death, leaving it to another author to pick up and complete. Mr. Mills has done a god job of completing this adventure. As the Stan Hurley character (American Assassin) is fond of saying: "It's not how you play the game, it's whether or not your opponent ends up dismembered in the woods".I think Vince Flynn would be extremely upset if he read this book. I have read a lot of Vince Flynn novels but this was my first and last reading of a "Vince Flynn" novel actually written by Kyle Mills. I had heard from someone else who had read another "Vince Flynn" novel written by Kyle Mills that it wasn't very good and not recommended. But I thought I'd give it a try as I liked the actual Vince Flynn novels. However, after reading the 1st chapter, I gave up and threw it out. The temperance shown to the terrorists was nauseating. These are people that for insane and displaced reasoning, want us dead. They murder men, women and children without a second thought yet Mills portrays them as the good guys. Mitch Rapp is described as Satan's representative, certainly not Mitch being the good guy. He also allows the terrorist to escape multiple times and that portrays him as incompetent. As I said, this was the first and absolutely the last time I ever read a Kyle Mills novel.Stellar Mitch Rapp thriller!! Lethal Agent (Mitch Rapp #18)Mitch Rapp has always been a man among boys, someone who dared evil to knock on his front door. Mitch Rapp has never been one to back down from a challenge but Lethal Agent puts Mitch in a situation that is a little abnormal for him.You get to see a man hell bent on ending the fight that he’s thought has been long gone in this amazing Kyle Mille thriller, building off of the amazing work of Vince Flynn. There are moments you see glimpses of the old Mitch while there are times you see him doing things that are far from what you’ve seen before. Trying to contain a man like Mitch is hard, and a lot more difficult when he has a huge mission. You won’t be disappointed with the latest installment of Mitch Rapp and you’ll gladly see a lot of Vince Flynn in this with the flare of Kyle Mills! Enjoy!

"Whether rules over relationships or correctness over community, respective Western and non-Western worldviews may differ on appropriate conduct, discretion, and exceptions. Randolph and O'Brien write with grace and clarity. Though evangelical, they steer clear of moral or political agendas and give no hint of anti-Western sentiments; they even suggest someone write a complementary sequel: Misreading Scripture with Eastern Eyes. Their extensive range of biblical and contemporary samples makes this an excellent resource for confessional Bible study contexts or an entry-level textbook in undergraduate courses on biblical interpretation." (Martin W. Mittelstadt, Religious Studies Review 39, no. 2, June 2013)"Written in engaging prose, Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes is a must-have for students of the Bible, and especially students of biblical apologetics. Any seasoned traveler knows that when someone visits a foreign country for the first time, he or she will be well served by a competent guide. When it comes to the social world of the Bible, Richards and O'Brien serve as tour guides par excellence." (James Patrick Holding, Christian Research Journal 36, no. 5)"For many, [this] book will offer a dose of humility with hope. One is encouraged to admit, 'I don't know' while at the same time is spurred on to study the Bible more. Missionaries will be challenged to think more theologically and to listen respectfully to nationals who live around them. Theologians will be forced to consider how the adage 'context is king' applies to their own worldview. This is a perfect book to discuss within small groups at church or as teams on the mission field." (Jackson Wu, Evangelical Missions Quarterly, July 2013)"This is an outstanding treatment of a complex and important topic. . . . This would make a good textbook for courses in hermeneutics or biblical interpretation, cultural studies, prolegomena, or theological method, as well as small-group studies in a local church. The book is written at a level that educated laypeople as well as pastors, teachers, and scholars will find helpful." (Glenn Rl. Kreider, Bibliotheca Sacra, October–December 2013)"A politely confrontational book that bids you trade in your cultural spectacles and rethink how your worldview distorts your scriptural conclusions. Sex, money, food, self-focus, prejudices, and much more: developed with apt storytelling and enlightening examples." (Worship Leader Magazine, May 2013)"A fascinating guide for any serious Bible reader! Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes reveals the 'habits of the mind' that might blind us to the Bible's intended message. Richards and O'Brien unpack the intricacies and nuances of cultural communication to help people better understand the Bible. To help you know--and live--the Christian life more faithfully." (Nikki Toyama-Szeto, Urbana program director, coauthor of Partnering with the Global Church)"Richards and O'Brien open our eyes to the crosscultural nature of the Bible. Their book is a helpful resource in understanding Scripture on its own terms, without imposing our assumptions on the biblical authors and their first readers." (Lindsay Olesberg, author, The Bible Study Handbook, and senior associate for Scripture engagement, Lausanne Movement)"The authors of Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes make a convincing case that those who trust in the Bible should (for biblical reasons) be more self-conscious about themselves. Their demonstration of how unself-conscious mores influence the understanding of Scripture is as helpful as the many insights they draw from Scripture itself. This is a good book for better understanding ourselves, the Christian world as it now exists and the Bible." (Mark A. Noll, Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History, University of Notre Dame, coauthor, Clouds of Witnesses: Christian Voices from Africa and Asia)"Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes is an important book that comes along at a critical moment in global evangelical history. Helpful examples reveal our cultural tendencies and biases that could hinder a deeper reading of Scripture. The authors help us to recognize our blind spots and offer insight that honors the intention of Scripture to be read in the context of community. I am grateful to the authors for their effort to be self-reflective and engage in a critical examination of our engagement with Scripture from within Western culture." (Soong-Chan Rah, Milton B. Engebretson Associate Professor of Church Growth and Evangelism at North Park Theological Seminary, author of The Next Evangelicalism: Freeing the Church from Western Cultural Captivity)"This is a revolutionary book for evangelical Bible-believers. If its readers end the book motivated to ask the questions it invites and even inspired to identify other possible misreadings because of Western cultural blinders that have not been discussed, they will be more ready to live out the kind of biblically faithful, Christ-honoring and God-fearing lives that they desire to and that the world needs." (Amos Yong, J. Rodman Williams Professor of Theology, Regent University School of Divinity, Virginia) E. Randolph Richards (Ph.D., Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) is dean of the School of Ministry and professor of biblical studies at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida. He is a coauthor of Rediscovering Paul and the author of Paul and First-Century Letter Writing.

What was clear to the original readers of Scripture is not always clear to us. Because of the cultural distance between the biblical world and our contemporary setting, we often bring modern Western biases to the text. For example:
  • When Western readers hear Paul exhorting women to "dress modestly," we automatically think in terms of sexual modesty. But most women in that culture would never wear racy clothing. The context suggests that Paul is likely more concerned about economic modesty--that Christian women not flaunt their wealth through expensive clothes, braided hair and gold jewelry.
  • Some readers might assume that Moses married "below himself" because his wife was a dark-skinned Cushite. Actually, Hebrews were the slave race, not the Cushites, who were highly respected. Aaron and Miriam probably thought Moses was being presumptuous by marrying "above himself."
  • Western individualism leads us to assume that Mary and Joseph traveled alone to Bethlehem. What went without saying was that they were likely accompanied by a large entourage of extended family.
Biblical scholars Brandon O'Brien and Randy Richards shed light on the ways that Western readers often misunderstand the cultural dynamics of the Bible. They identify nine key areas where modern Westerners have significantly different assumptions about what might be going on in a text. Drawing on their own crosscultural experience in global mission, O'Brien and Richards show how better self-awareness and understanding of cultural differences in language, time and social mores allow us to see the Bible in fresh and unexpected ways. Getting beyond our own cultural assumptions is increasingly important for being Christians in our interconnected and globalized world. About Indonesia and not Ancient Near East I thought this would give a good new prospective on the themes surrounding the writings of the New Testament instead, I got The West is wrong in pretty much everything and other cultures got it right. Plus, they go very near total multicultural PC hating on the West. They do not actually prove that other cultures are correct instead it is inferred. Heck they even brought up how they were "Both White Males" and therefore couldn't understand other cultures. It appeared more of a "you are wrong and therefore should just shutup and listen to how others do it" vibe. Not what the title presents this book as. Beware.Completely ridiculous, a major disappointment I was really excited to get this book, but the absolute best part is the Introduction. As the book progressed, I found myself wondering how on earth people who so seriously misunderstand basic gospel principles ended up teaching at a Bible college (one of the authors) or teaching world religions at a secular college (the other author). For example, they try to say that the reason anyone mentioned where someone was from in the Bible is because they were racist - I’m sorry, but Rebecca does not bring up the place Esau’s wife is from because she’s racist, she brings it up because it means they are not the same religion, and Esau has therefore married outside of the covenant! They twist things in scriptural passages so intensely (both in what they think most people understand them to say and in what they claim the passages “really” say) in their effort to make a point, that I could barely finish the book. There are so many missed opportunities to point out differences in Eastern and Western thought, it’s almost absurd that the authors focused on what they did. This book is completely ridiculous, a major disappointment, and ultimately a waste of money. Definitely do NOT recommend. The Title is a Lie. My men's group was excited to dig into this one, but quickly grew disappointed and annoyed. The title is a misnomer. While there are a few examples of how folks with a Western way of thinking sometimes misunderstand specific passages of the Bible, that's not what this book is about. These authors have a very clear agenda of how they think Christianity should be more collectivist, and it's cultural relativism gone too far. Over and over, they talk about how other cultures do things (most prominently Indonesia), and infer that the Western way is not just different, but wrong. They're welcome to think that. And some of it is interesting. But it doesn't support the premise of the book. It's really too bad, because we were looking forward to being challenged and shown how some passages can be read in a new (old) light. But there's actually very little scripture quoted in the book. More often, the authors make a claim that scripture says 'such and such', but then don't back it up, or they quote some verses that clearly don't mean what they are inferring. Instead, they give more examples of how other cultures do things, as if that backs up their premise of what they claim the Bible says. If anyone is misreading, it's the authors. They should read the title of their book.
